Happy Contempt for Labor Day By Mike Konopacki Labor Day, like most of our national holidays, has lost its meaning and represents the exact opposite of what it’s supposed to be. A day to celebrate American workers is now mostly just another excuse for retailers to hold a “sale” of foreign-made goods. At least some workers lucky enough to have jobs get a Monday off—with or without pay—but few really observe the holiday as intended. Worse, far too many are cheerleading attacks on workers, unions, jobs and our standard of living....

The Plattsburgh Teachers Association had a logo that their leaders thought needed a serious makeover. It was cluttered with mixed images (a sun, mountains, a child and books) and it tried to say too many things – who they are, their affiliates, and the local union’s mission. Inspired by the “Labor Art for Issues, Campaigns and Logos” session presented at NYSUT’s Local Action Project, members of the Plattsburgh TA got to work. Helping them in their task were presenters Gary Huck, the only cartoonist in the country...
